Expansy

Expansy is an expression analyzer that allows you to declare expression elements of your design.

Installation

  • If you are using Gradle just add the following dependency to your build.gradle.
implementation "com.github.joutvhu:expansy:1.0.2"
  • Or add the following dependency to your pom.xml if you are using Maven.
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.github.joutvhu</groupId>
    <artifactId>expansy</artifactId>
    <version>1.0.2</version>
</dependency>

How to use?

First you need to define the elements of your design. The elements need to implement the interface com.joutvhu.expansy.element.Element.

public class NumberElement implements Element<BigDecimal> {
    @Override
    public String name() {
        return "Number";
    }

    @Override
    public void define(Definer<BigDecimal> definer) {
        definer
                .name("value")
                .numeric();
    }

    @Override
    public BigDecimal render(Node<BigDecimal> node) {
        String value = node.getString("value");
        return new BigDecimal(value);
    }
}

Each element need to implement define and render methods.

  • The define method is used to declare the structure of the element. Use the match functions below to define the structure.
  • The render method is used to create the result object based on the analyzed node.
  • Also, you can override the name method to name the element (optional). If you don't overwrite the default is the name of the element class.

After you have created the elements, register them and use.

Expansy<BigDecimal> expansy = Expansy
        .instance()
        ... // register other elements
        .register(new NumberElement());

BigDecimal result = expansy.useAll().parseSingle("5 + 5 * 3");

maybe

Syntax:

definer
    .maybe()
    ... // content may or may not be appear
    .end()

options

Could match with a group in the matcher groups.

Syntax:

definer
    .options()
    ... // case 1
    .or()
    ... // case 2
    .or()
    ... // case 3
    .end()

You can declare as many cases as you want. The cases at the top will take precedence.

public class GroupMultiply implements Element<BigDecimal> {
    @Override
    public void define(Definer<BigDecimal> definer) {
        definer
            .options()
                .name("first")
                .include("Group")
                .name("second")
                .include("Number")
            .or()
                .name("first")
                .include("Number")
                .name("second")
                .include("Group")
            .or()
                .name("first")
                .include("Group")
                .name("second")
                .include("Group")
            .end();
    }
    ...
}

loop

Used to define a matcher group it is repeatable.

Syntax:

definer
    .loop()
    ... // repeatable content
    .end()

The following are variations of the loop() function:

  • loop() the minimum number of repetitions is 0 and unlimited number of repetitions.
  • loop(int repetitions) used to indicate the exact number of repetitions.
  • loop(int minRepetitions, Integer maxRepetitions) used to indicate the minimum and maximum number of repetitions.
public class VariableElement implements Element<Object> {
    @Override
    public void define(Definer<Object> definer) {
        definer
            .equalsWith("$")
            .name("name")
            .word()
            .loop()
                .options()
                    .character('.')
                    .name("child")
                    .word()
                .or()
                    .equalsWith("[")
                    .name("child")
                    .quote('\'')
                    .equalsWith("]")
                .end()
            .end();
    }
    ...
}

between

Used to define a matcher group it can repeat and be interspersed by another matcher group.

Syntax:

definer
    .between()
    ... // content to separate
    .is()
    ... // define separator here
    .end()

The following are variations of the between() function:

  • between() the minimum number of repetitions is 0 and unlimited number of repetitions.
  • between(int repetitions) used to indicate the exact number of repetitions.
  • between(int minRepetitions, Integer maxRepetitions) used to indicate the minimum and maximum number of repetitions.

The following example uses between to define function parameters separated by commas.

public class FunctionElement implements Element<BigDecimal> {
    @Override
    public void define(Definer<BigDecimal> definer) {
        definer
            .equalsWith("#")
            .name("name")
            .word()        // Function name
            .equalsWith("(")
            .between()
                .spaces()
                .name("param")
                .elements() // The parameter can be any element
                .spaces()
            .is()
                .equalsWith(",") // There is a comma between the parameters
            .end()
            .equalsWith(")");
    }
    ...
}

Render

The render method is used to generate the result of the expression. The render method will receive a Node.

The Node is the result of the expression string after being analysed, you can use it to get parts of expression. The Node represents only part of an expression, not the entire input expression.

Use the name(String name) function to name parts of an expression and then get it in render method.

public class Add implements Element<BigDecimal> {
    @Override
    public void define(Definer<BigDecimal> definer) {
        definer
                .name("first")
                .elements()
                .spaces()
                .equalsWith("+")
                .spaces()
                .name("second")
                .exclude("Add", "Subtract");
    }

    @Override
    public BigDecimal render(Node<BigDecimal> node) {
        BigDecimal first = node.getNode("first").render();
        BigDecimal second = node.getNode("second").render();
        return first.add(second);
    }
}

The structure of Node is similar to a tree, it can contain child Nodes. A node's children can be another node or a string.

public class MultiplyOrDivision implements Element<BigDecimal> {
    @Override
    public void define(Definer<BigDecimal> definer) {
        definer
                .name("first")
                .exclude("AddOrSubtract")
                .spaces()
                .name("operator")
                .equalsWith("/", "*")
                .spaces()
                .name("second")
                .exclude("AddOrSubtract", "MultiplyOrDivision");
    }

    @Override
    public BigDecimal render(Node<BigDecimal> node) {
        BigDecimal first = node.getNode("first").render();
        BigDecimal second = node.getNode("second").render();
        String operator = node.getString("operator");
        if ("*".equalsWith(operator))
            return first.multiply(second);
        else
            return first.divide(second);
    }
}

Branch

A Branch represents a way of arranging the elements to match the input expression. A Branch can contain one or more Nodes.

The expression analyzing can return multiple branches. BranchSelector is used to select a branch when you callparse or parseSingle.

List<Branch<BigDecimal>> branchs = expansy.useAll().analysis("8 - 3 + 3");

If you define addition like this

public void define(Definer<BigDecimal> definer) {
    definer
        .name("first")
        .elements()
        .spaces()
        .name("operator")
        .equalsWith("+")
        .spaces()
        .name("second")
        .elements();
}

And use it to analysis the expression 1 + 2 + 3, you can get 2 branches:

Branch1:
- Node:+
  - Node:+
    - Node:1
    - Node:2
  - Node:3

Branch2:
- Node:+
  - Node:1
  - Node:+
    - Node:2
    - Node:3

To apply the precedence of the operation you can use exclude() instead of elements() to exclude some elements at first or second. See examples in the Render section. Use the following rule:

  • The first will exclude operations with lower precedence than the current operation.
  • The second will exclude operations with lower or equal (because the priority is left-to-right) precedence than the current operation.
