Subjects then completed a free speech task (60 seconds - e.g. “Tell us about a recent happy memory based on experiences from the past month.”). This prompt was used to establish positive or negative valence, which has been shown in multiple other studies as a way to extract acoustic information that may be relevant for conditions like depression and dementia. Subjects were not able to stop the timer early and had to speak for the entire 60 seconds.
