Adaptivity Mesh

I have a problem nanocomposite pillar in a matrix. The interface is modelled as a diffuse and the phases pillar/matrix is define with phase variable chi. The lenght of the interface is 0.5 and described by heaviside type function. I am trying to add addaptive mesh at the interface between the pillar and the matrix where it is refined at the interface and I keep getting this error:
