This is the data structure for the new geometry layer. Let's start with surfaces, then migrate other parts of the geometry later. This is just a placeholder at this point. No code actually stores geometry there, nor accesses it.
This is just one step towards storing surface geometry in the geometry layer. It is not used anywhere yet.
