The old versions were no longer correct, due to the changes to the `Handles` API.

Make the method names more explicit and consistent, simplify the arguments a bit, and make the methods less panicky (and hence, more flexible).
I need the increased flexibility for #2023, and figured I'd include the cleanups while I was at it.
