I have tried a few things to get Linux wheels to work but I don't think I can spend any more time on that now.
Instead here I am adding up to date instructions for installing with pip on Linux using the sdist from PyPI or a source checkout. I also added a script that can be tested in CI to ensure that these instructions do work.
