This was the previous functionality that @jsermer is referring to. Setting the

Huh, I had no idea that index patterns had this feature. Seem like quite a hidden feature. I assume since Discover used Lens' component, and Lens (aka the builders of Lens, aka me) wasn't aware of this functionality it was never tested for support. I'd assume there needs to be extra functionality added to support custom pattern id's. Would it ever make sense to display this custom pattern id next to the index-pattern in the list itself? Or maybe list it as it's own option? Seems oddly hidden when in the old UI, typing a custom id doesn't match the visual results. |
Specifically, our users find this feature useful if you have an index pattern referencing multiple different index names (networklogs-,applogs-) and you wanted to provide a 'custom' name (alllogs). |
@cchaos same, I never knew it existed and is definitely a hidden feature. The strange thing is that I don't see where the custom id is ever displayed beyond the creation of the index pattern. Seems like that would be nice to display to utilize this functionality. @jsermer I can see how this would help with that. |
The only place I can see it displayed is in the URL or via the Kibana API |
Good to know. |
I was also not aware of this feature, we could definitely display it in the list next to the name |

Closing this because it's not planned to be resolved in the foreseeable future. It will be tracked in our Icebox and will be re-opened if our priorities change. Feel free to re-open if you think it should be melted sooner. |

Describe the bug: Previously (6.8.6), you could search the possible index patterns in the discover app via name and not just by searching for actual index pattern matching terms.
