according to https://docs.github.com/en/communities/using-templates-t…o-encourage-useful-issues-and-pull-requests/configuring-issue-templates-for-your-repository this should work
sidenote: we are using what GH calls the "legacy" template -- there seems to be a new yaml format.
it could make sense to rather try this by pushing directly to main -- after all one can only see the full affect after merging/pushing to main.
