Stepper does not move ! #62
Comments
When you spin the encoder, does the RPM readout show anything? |
the rpm moves up and down like normal but the stepper doesnt move...its like if the controller does not get the infomation i even changed the variables in the progrm and still nothing at all...is there a way to check if the board sends signal to the controller?
|
Do you have an oscilloscope?

It is normal for a powered up stepper to feel stuck.

hi there!I dont have one and i also dont know how to use one......i have checked everything alot of times and still the motor is not turning...i even tried to program it with different settings but nothing at all......i m really sad right now.. |
Don’t despair! I am certain the group here will be able to help you solve the problem. Without a scope, troubleshooting will be a bit difficult. Do you have a friend with a scope?

i hope cause i am buildig this project for a long time right now and i the last two days i am stuck at it...maybe i can buy one? dont know someone that has one....but i wouldnt know how to use it ...is this something easy that i could learn? |
will something like this do the job? https://www.a-store.gr/dsO138-tft-digital-oscilloscope |
It will be easy to walk you through using a scope, preferably by phone. Where are you located?

i live in Greece...my knowledge to electronics is not very good....a friend o mine made the connections and followed the plans...JonWoellhaf maybe you have facebook or something to talk about ?Thanks for your kindness to help me! |
OK. Greece is a bit far from me in Utah, USA! The scope link does not work for me. Just a thought: Did you set the LAUNCHXL board switches as Clough specified? Specifically, S3 and S4 – the switches hidden under the Boost board?

Unless you just have way too low of a voltage to power the motor..? It sounds like the wiring has to be mixed up / wrong, either at the Launchpad to the controller connection, or the controller to the motor connection..? I’d say most likely wrong at the launchpad, since the motor is locked under power and showing a green status (that’s good). If the wiring is 100% confirmed to be correct, a scope may be the next best step. Im betting on a mixup at the launchpad to the servo-controller wiring though. |
A picture showing the wiring on both ends (launchpad to controller) would be very helpful too. When you power everything down, the motor should spin pretty freely (with some light cogging / clicks), have you tried that? Just to make sure your motor is not totally frozen up. |
Things to check
|
I have tried this before i connect the motor and indeed it spined with some cogging...i didnt try this now but i will try it again! The driver has some different signs on it.....it doesn't have the fLt so i connected the alm+ to alm+ and alm- to alm- Also the new driver has a pend+ and pend - option that i didnt connect it. |
|
It says +5v on the pul+ side i connected as clough42 had it on thw diagram.Do you believe that it needs something connected differently? |
Switches on the driver are they set right? See manual page 6 |
I have connected everything exactly as you say on the driver...tha switches are also set for 4000 resolution as the pdf shows... The power supply i use is this Single Output AC to DC Power Supply 400W 70V 5.7A ....i really dont know what is wrong... :(. Os there a possibility that the cables can cause such a problem ?For the stepper motor i used cable for stepper motor with shield .FoR the stepper encoder i used its extension cable. But for the screen and the rotary encoder i used what i had on hand....for thw screen i cut a pc lan cable and connected pc pins on its ends...but thw screen works and shows the values and also the encoder..is there a possibility to the problem be cause by something like this? |
Do you have an LED and a 330 or 470 ohm resistor?

With the lathe running, you want to use the LED or scope to verify the pulse signal is active. I thought an LED would be a simple way to do this. If you can get one, connect the resistor to the anode. apply +5 volts to the other end of the resistor. Touch the cathode to the pulse– input. I expect the LED will light. At slowest speed it may flicker. Also probe the direction and enable inputs. Direction should cause the LED to light when direction is one way and be dark the other way. If it stays lit or dark when you change direction, then we’re on to something. Enable should light the LED whenever the servo should be turning.
That little digital scope looks great! I just bought one. But it’s a kit. You said you have little experience with electronics, so I doubt you will be able to build it. But maybe someone can do that for you. You’ll also want to buy a scope probe.

Leave the ELS board attached and the servo driver disconnected.
If you DO see a meter reading, as before, then we are very close to finding the problem. If not, we're back to square one.
So I hope you see a reading. Assuming you do see a reading, please try this:
Leave the meter black lead attached where it is.
Move the red lead to the pin on the ELS board directly above P00. It's this pin:
Spin the encoder and see if the meter reading changes. If it doesn't change, we have found the problem. I expect it to behave the same as when you were connected to the bottom of the board. We're verifying the connection is good.
Next, move the red lead to this pad:
You should see the same result.
I am VERY interested in what you discover!

The servo power supply ground and the TI board ground should not be connected. Doing so partially defeats the purpose of having the servo driver inputs optically coupled.

i am anxious and i wait the reply!I hope we are close! :) |
OK, and good morning (at least here in Utah) 😀 The videos are very interesting. Test 3 proves the signal is getting to the gate of Q4. We now have to prove that Q4 is working. First, let's confirm the signal is not getting to the STEP- pin on the servo driver connector. To do this, you'll need to use the resistor as before. |
Good morning!!:) And what should i do know? How to check it? Do the same test again ?in which cables do i connect the resistor? |
Assuming the signal is still not present on STEP-, please do this to verify continuity from Q4's Drain to the STEP- terminal on the servo driver connector.
What does the meter show? |
Go ahead and check the continuity first, as shown above. |
Ok i will do it and post back :) |
Note: for test 4, I found the screw on the STEP- terminal needs to be tight in order to get a reliable reading. That was unexpected. |
I arrived to my workshop and i tried to do the test...i also tried something else! Then to connect the screw with the bottom of it in the board and they dont connect in two pins!!number stp- and dir -!!! |
You checked continuity from the connector screw on top to the corresponding pin on the bottom and the meter showed STP- and DIR- were not connected. Correct? Please be certain the connector screws are tight and measure again. |
It worksssss it worksssssss!!!!!the faulty olpart was the piece with the screws!!it now works but thw moter does not turn in reverse when changing feed!! |
EXCELLENT! Yea! What did you do to fix the connector? |
Most of us here would probably agree that a faulty connector was pretty much at the bottom of the list of possible problems! |
I put some tiny hair metals from cable in it....!!!i will change it as soon as i have the opportunity!I cant upload a video in vimeo cause i have reached the limit but i will upload in another site.So now i have another problem the motor doesnt go reverse.. |
I am so glad and i really reallyyyy thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Wow, yea- did not see that coming. Congrats all! |
i am so thankfull to all!!!!I really really thank you!!Stil doesnt work as it should though it doesnt spin the other way when i move the ensoder opposite direction....if we sole this too it will be perfect!!C |
Looking forward to seeing the video! |
i am uploading right now it is almost done! |
here it is !! This is the video it is a little slow and needs to bandwitch a little bit ! https://files.fm/u/kqg98pud?fbclid=IwAR1Q6mx57fdvbsDgET4i-MhcDBaT1TnEiCQucMQ5zwSolND8belttr5hDss#/view/VID_20200416_172318.mp4;play |
So after the help i had from @JonWoellhaf @gusosborne @Johnboy251 and @Vrossi050 the motor finally moved as it was a faulty 6 pin screw connector!I will close this thread and make a new one as @JonWoellhaf told me so as all to be organised and others could be helped from this thread as @JonWoellhaf and the other members had alot of good ideas that led to the solution! I really thank all the participants of this thread they are of great help and when all the project ends i will make a video with all the project restoration! |
I think you should close this issue and open a new one. That way, others who have a problem like your new one will be able to more easily find the solution -- and I am sure we will find the solution! 😀 |
i just did :) i opened a new one |
Hi there! I realy need some help. I connected everything together and the closed loop stepper does not move. The stepper i chose is this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DE-12N-m-Nema34-154mm-Closed-Loop-Servomotor-Servosteuerung-HSS86-Driver-CNC-Kit/273916651738?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649. I connected everything in the driver as the wiring all diagram shows but then the motor controler has a green light but when i spin the encoder the motor does not move and it is stuck!
and a video https://vimeo.com/405923887
