Hi there! I realy need some help. I connected everything together and the closed loop stepper does not move. The stepper i chose is this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DE-12N-m-Nema34-154mm-Closed-Loop-Servomotor-Servosteuerung-HSS86-Driver-CNC-Kit/273916651738?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649. I connected everything in the driver as the wiring all diagram shows but then the motor controler has a green light but when i spin the encoder the motor does not move and it is stuck!

When you spin the encoder, does the RPM readout show anything?
It is normal for a powered up stepper to feel stuck.

the rpm moves up and down like normal but the stepper doesnt move...its like if the controller does not get the infomation i even changed the variables in the progrm and still nothing at all...is there a way to check if the board sends signal to the controller?

OK. Greece is a bit far from me in Utah, USA! The scope link does not work for me. Just a thought: Did you set the LAUNCHXL board switches as Clough specified? Unless you just have way too low of a voltage to power the motor..? It sounds like the wiring has to be mixed up / wrong, either at the Launchpad to the controller connection, or the controller to the motor connection..?

I’d say most likely wrong at the launchpad, since the motor is locked under power and showing a green status (that’s good).
When you power everything off, are you able to spin the motor?

If the wiring is 100% confirmed to be correct, a scope may be the next best step. Im betting on a mixup at the launchpad to the servo-controller wiring though.

@gusosborne
Copy link

A picture showing the wiring on both ends (launchpad to controller) would be very helpful too.

When you power everything down, the motor should spin pretty freely (with some light cogging / clicks), have you tried that? Just to make sure your motor is not totally frozen up.

@Vrossi050
Copy link

Things to check

  1. Did you use the motor extension cable that came with the kit? If you don't it won't work.
  2. Does the servo alarm when turned on?
  3. Does it turn freely or is locked in position?
  4. Voltage correct to the motor?
  5. micro steps correct?

I have tried this before i connect the motor and indeed it spined with some cogging...i didnt try this now but i will try it again! The driver has some different signs on it.....it doesn't have the fLt so i connected the alm+ to alm+ and alm- to alm- Also the new driver has a pend+ and pend - option that i didnt connect it.

    I used the extension cable and the servo alarm doesnt light at all when turned on.I connected the motor like the connections it has on it. I put the driver microstep to 4000 and to thw firmware microstep to 4 and Resolution to 1000 as clough42 suggested to me

I have connected everything exactly as you say on the driver...tha switches are also set for 4000 resolution as the pdf shows... The power supply i use is this Single Output AC to DC Power Supply 400W 70V 5.7A ....i really dont know what is wrong... :(. Os there a possibility that the cables can cause such a problem ?For the stepper motor i used cable for stepper motor with shield .FoR the stepper encoder i used its extension cable. But for the screen and the rotary encoder i used what i had on hand....for thw screen i cut a pc lan cable and connected pc pins on its ends...but thw screen works and shows the values and also the encoder..is there a possibility to the problem be cause by something like this?

OK, and good morning (at least here in Utah) 😀

The videos are very interesting.

Test 3 proves the signal is getting to the gate of Q4. We now have to prove that Q4 is working.

First, let's confirm the signal is not getting to the STEP- pin on the servo driver connector. To do this, you'll need to use the resistor as before.

@JonWoellhaf

Assuming the signal is still not present on STEP-, please do this to verify continuity from Q4's Drain to the STEP- terminal on the servo driver connector.

  1. Power off.

  2. Put your meter on ohms.

  3. Touch the meter leads together. The meter should read close to zero ohms.

  4. Put one probe on the connector screw for STEP-.

  5. Put the other probe on the Drain of Q4. That is here:

Q4 Drain

What does the meter show?

@JonWoellhaf

Go ahead and check the continuity first, as shown above.

Now let's confirm Q4's Source is grounded.

With the meter still on ohms, probe these two points:

Q4 Source

What does the meter read?

@JonWoellhaf

Note: for test 4, I found the screw on the STEP- terminal needs to be tight in order to get a reliable reading. That was unexpected.

I arrived to my workshop and i tried to do the test...i also tried something else! Then to connect the screw with the bottom of it in the board and they dont connect in two pins!!number stp- and dir -!!!

@JonWoellhaf

You checked continuity from the connector screw on top to the corresponding pin on the bottom and the meter showed STP- and DIR- were not connected. Correct?

Please be certain the connector screws are tight and measure again.

I really thank all the participants of this thread they are of great help and when all the project ends i will make a video with all the project restoration!
