First issue I've ever seen in a free software project that reduces to: "please spend your money for me" :) Donations welcome? |
sure, where to? it's not like I'm not donating my time to this frigging project either - i maintain the debian package and submitted a few patches already. but whatever, who's counting anyways... i just thought you would like to know... |
The report is valid and appreciated and will not be closed until the CFO can decide the appropriate steps. Thanks |
awesome! i was serious, btw - i'd be happy to sponsor the domain, it's the least i can do after that trolling of mine. ;) |
The problem has nothing to do with payment; Namecheap screwed up and lost the domain when they last upgraded their code, causing it to expire. |
@kaniini Never go full Namecheap. I've been with namesilo for one renewal so far and I've had no problems. Though I would suppose you have entered an issue with NC to get the domain back. Meantime, what's the testnet IP4 or IP6? |
@janicez |
Closing. |
website still down though - what's the plan here? |
I don't think there is one, but it's not like we can get the domain back... |
Charybdis is a legacy project for a deprecated technology. I don't think
kaniini wants to maintain a domain for it by himself. We can pool some
contributions to do that, but I personally don't have an interest in that
unless we reactivate development. We can do that by implementing the latest
iteration of the protocol, known colloquially as matrix. I'm open to your
ideas for how to move forward. It is highly unlikely that movement will be
unilateral action on this from kaniini. Let us know, -Jason

It is sacrilegious to consider Matrix to be any more than a spiritual relative of IRC. IRC is light, easy on the computers it runs on, and ridiculously easy to implement. Matrix is heavy, hard on the client (over 1 GB per day, impossible on Canadian cellular), hard to implement on the best of days, and shares only a founder (the exalted Jarkko Oikarinen) with IRC. |
can we please avoid a discussion of matrix vs irc here? it's completely irrelevant. if someone can get the domain back, it's basically trivial to pay for it and i have already offered to do so. let's just move on. |
@anarcat, agreed and I'm waiting to hear what @kaniini has to say about what he wants to do... I'll match your contribution if this project wants to move into more than legacy maintenance. @janicez I think that discussion really merits an issue and you should open one because I want to reply and possibly open up a new generation of development from where it goes. |
Dude, @jevolk I'm guessing and almost hoping you're sarcastic at what you are saying |
to me, i don't really care what the current charybdis maintainers do. but yes, somehow namecheap managed to lose the domain and now it belongs to some other person. i don't think there is a solution for that. |
http://www.charybdis.io/ and http://charybdis.io/ give a "Server not found" error in Firefox.
further inspection reveals the domain expired in december 2016 and will be deleted by the end of march.
maybe you'd like to pour money back into that stupid DNS drainhole? :)
