The shell expansion state is read-only, so it’s unnecessary to expensively copy the expansion state (for expand.py) or create a new bash process (forbash-expand.py).

Is this needed in some case I’m missing?

The expansion state is read-only, so it's unnecessary to run expensive
operations to duplicate it.

No I think you are totally right, I don't think there is a case where we want to modify the shell state in expansions. If this PR is ready to merge we can merge :)
