I like the idea but can't say I'm a fan of this name, "ReflectFromReflect" doesn't seem very intuitive to me. Maybe ConvertFromReflect, CastFromReflect, ValueFromReflect, TypeFromReflect? |
Yeah, I don't love the name. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about this as the It'd be great if there was a way to get the types directly from the trait (e.g. So I think it's best to just keep this as is for now. You could maybe argue that |

This a a pretty simple change (just one more ReflectX
type data) and required for some use cases of Reflect
.
I just wished this was registered by default, but that's a story for another time (maybe #6056)

I've wanted this for quite a while. This + opt-out FromReflect + opt-out Reflect would be incredibly convenient for de/serialization.

# Objective Resolves #4597 (based on the work from #6056 and a refresh of #4147) When using reflection, we may often end up in a scenario where we have a Dynamic representing a certain type. Unfortunately, we can't just call `MyType::from_reflect` as we do not have knowledge of the concrete type (`MyType`) at runtime. Such scenarios happen when we call `Reflect::clone_value`, use the reflection deserializers, or create the Dynamic type ourselves. ## Solution Add a `ReflectFromReflect` type data struct. The three main reasons I closed #4147 were that: 1. Registering `ReflectFromReflect` is clunky (deriving `FromReflect` *and* registering `ReflectFromReflect`) 2. The ecosystem and Bevy itself didn't seem to pay much attention to deriving `FromReflect` 3. I didn't see a lot of desire from the community for such a feature However, as time has passed it seems 2 and 3 are not really true anymore. Bevy is internally adding lots more `FromReflect` derives, which should make this feature all the more useful. Additionally, I have seen a growing number of people look for something like `ReflectFromReflect`. I think 1 is still an issue, but not a horrible one. Plus it could be made much, much better using #6056. And I think splitting this feature out of #6056 could lead to #6056 being adopted sooner (or at least make the need more clear to users). ###### Why not just re-open #4147? The main reason is so that this PR can garner more attention than simply re-opening the old one. ## How This Works For the Bevy 0.10 release blog post (and for the first time ever), I'm publicly opening the doors to other people writing blog post sections. Specifically, if you worked on a feature in a substantial way and are interested in presenting it, you can now ask to claim a section by leaving a comment in this PR. If you claim a section, submit a pull request to the `release-0.10.0` branch in this repo. For the next week, we will be filling in sections (the release target is Saturday March 4th). Please don't claim a section if you don't plan on completing it within that timeline. Also don't claim a section if you weren't an active participant in the design and implementation of the change (unless you are a Maintainer or SME). I will claim any unclaimed sections. Try to match the style of previous release blog posts as much as possible. 1. Show, don't tell. Don't bombard people with information. Avoid large walls of text _and_ large walls of code. Prefer the pattern "byte sized description of one thing" -> "example code/picture/video contextualizing that one thing" -> repeat. Take readers on a journey step by simple step. 2. Don't use up reader's "mental bandwidth" without good reason. We can't afford page-long descriptions of minor bug fixes. If it isn't a "headliner change", keep the description short and sweet. If a change is self describing, let it do that (ex: We now support this new mesh shape primitive ... this is what it looks like). If it is a "headliner change", still try to keep it reasonable. We always have a lot to cover. 3. In slight competition with point (2), don't omit interesting technical information when it is truly fun and engaging. A good chunk of our users are highly technical and enjoy learning how the sausage is made. Try to strike a balance between "terse and simple" and "nerdy details". 4. When relevant, briefly describe the problem being solved first, then describe the solution we chose. This contextualizes the change and gives the feature value and purpose. 5. When possible, provide visuals. They create interest / keep people hooked / break up the monotony. 6. Record images and videos at the default bevy resolution (1280x720) 7. Provide an accurate listing of authors that meaningfully contributed to the feature. Try to sort in order of "contribution scale". This is hard to define, but try to be fair. When in doubt, ask other contributors, SMEs, and/or maintainers. 8. Provide numbers and graphs where possible. If something is faster, use numbers to back it up. We don't (yet) have automated graph generation in blog post style, so send data / info to me (@cart) if you want a graph made. ## Headliners Headliners are our "big ticket high importance / high profile" changes. They are listed briefly at the beginning of the blog post, their entries are roughly sorted "to the top", and they are given priority when it comes to "space in the blog post". # Objective **This implementation is based on bevyengine/rfcs#59 --- Resolves #4597 Full details and motivation can be found in the RFC, but here's a brief summary. `FromReflect` is a very powerful and important trait within the reflection API. It allows Dynamic types (e.g., `DynamicList`, etc.) to be formed into Real ones (e.g., `Vec<i32>`, etc.). This mainly comes into play concerning deserialization, where the reflection deserializers both return a `Box<dyn Reflect>` that almost always contain one of these Dynamic representations of a Real type. To convert this to our Real type, we need to use `FromReflect`. It also sneaks up in other ways. For example, it's a required bound for `T` in `Vec<T>` so that `Vec<T>` as a whole can be made `FromReflect`. It's also required by all fields of an enum as it's used as part of the `Reflect::apply` implementation. So in other words, much like `GetTypeRegistration` and `Typed`, it is very much a core reflection trait. The problem is that it is not currently treated like a core trait and is not automatically derived alongside `Reflect`. This makes using it a bit cumbersome and easy to forget. ## Solution Automatically derive `FromReflect` when deriving `Reflect`. Users can then choose to opt-out if needed using the `#[reflect(from_reflect = false)]` attribute. ```rust #[derive(Reflect)] struct Foo; #[derive(Reflect)] #[reflect(from_reflect = false)] struct Bar; fn test<T: FromReflect>(value: T) {} test(Foo); // <-- OK test(Bar); // <-- Panic! When using reflection, we may often end up in a scenario where we have a Dynamic representing a certain type. Unfortunately, we can't just call
MyType::from_reflect
as we do not have knowledge of the concrete type (MyType
) at runtime.Such scenarios happen when we call
Reflect::clone_value
, use the reflection deserializers, or create the Dynamic type ourselves.Solution
Add a
ReflectFromReflect
type data struct.This struct allows us to easily convert Dynamic representations of our types into their respective concrete instances.
Why this PR?
Why now?
The three main reasons I closed #4147 were that:
ReflectFromReflect
is clunky (derivingFromReflect
and registeringReflectFromReflect
)FromReflect
However, as time has passed it seems 2 and 3 are not really true anymore. Bevy is internally adding lots more
FromReflect
derives, which should make this feature all the more useful. Additionally, I have seen a growing number of people look for something likeReflectFromReflect
.I think 1 is still an issue, but not a horrible one. Plus it could be made much, much better using #6056. And I think splitting this feature out of #6056 could lead to #6056 being adopted sooner (or at least make the need more clear to users).
Why not just re-open #4147?
The main reason is so that this PR can garner more attention than simply re-opening the old one. This helps bring fresh eyes to the PR for potentially more perspectives/reviews.
