FabricBesuBenchmark

The code in this repository is made public for reference purposes only and were used for the Master's thesis "Permissioned Blockchains: A Comparative Study. A Deep Dive into Hyperledger Fabric and Hyperledger Besu" as uploaded to the Student Thesis Repository of the University of Groningen. The thesis can be found here: https://fse.studenttheses.ub.rug.nl. Below, a high-level overview is given of the contents of this repository.

  1. The benchmarkdata folder includes the raw Hyperledger Caliper reports resulting from benchmark execution, as well as the aggregated results.
  2. The besu folder includes the scripts and files used to create and start a Hyperledger Besu network using Docker for performance benchmarking. It is recommended to use the generate.sh file for some small configurations and launching everything.
  3. The caliper-workspace folder contains the configuration used to configure Hyperledger Caliper to conduct the benchmarks for both Fabric and Besu. Various scripts are present for launching the benchmarks.
  4. The drawio folder contains the files used to create the figures in the thesis. The .drawio, as well as the .pdf- and .tgn-files, can be imported on https://app.diagrams.net.
  5. The fabric-samples folder contains a number of mock smart contract implementations for Hyperledger Fabric, as provided by https://github.com/hyperledger/fabric-samples.
  6. The Hyperledger-Fabric2-0-configurator folder contains scripts to quickly generate and launch a Hyperledger Fabric network. These files are based on the work of JulianD267 as seen here https://github.com/JulianD267/Hyperledger-Fabric2-0-configurator. Some files have been changed to make them suitable for the thesis.
  7. The results folder includes the Matlab scripts and generated charts, representing the results of the benchmarks.
  8. The demo_besumarker_pubnetwork.js-file includes a script written to test the creation and execution of an arbitrary transaction to a non-SCA address using arbitrary payload data on the Ropsten network, representing the test on whether a privacy marker transaction would work on regular Ethereum nodes.
  9. The demo_different_CC.sh-file includes the steps for reproducing the Fabric aspect in which different chaincode implementations can be deployed, approved as being the same chaincode, and used.
  10. The README.md-file is the information presented here.
