i don't really want to use the extensions from MS, despite their upstream source being MIT licenced

...haha... - https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-cpptools/blob/main/LICENSE.md says:

Additional binary files may be downloaded at runtime after the initial installation; these are governed by the more restrictive proprietary license terms found at RuntimeLicenses.

And all these "extended" features you reference are part of those binaries.

But the good news: there is no need to use vscode including VSCodium without language support.
I can recommend a bunch of ones, as you likely don't use COBOL may I suggest the clangd extension for c/c++ llvm-vs-code-extensions.vscode-clangd and ASM cod…
