Landing page's OS X install instructions might miss sudo on "pkgin search "^ffmpeg[0-9]$" #450

Hi,

on OSX 10.10.5, fresh install, following pkgsrc.joyent.com/install-on-osx, line pkgin search "^ffmpeg[0-9]$" fails to constructs database (apologies for not having saved the exact output), while it works if executed with sudo.

Is it a miss in the instructions page 📚 (which actually uses sudoon all other commands after) or is there a real fresh install problem underneath ?

[loving the sw though 👍, great job]

You'll need to perform an initial pkgin update using sudo to fetch the remote repository information and store it locally, but after that you should be able to use the search functionality as a normal user (root is only required to be able to write to /var/db/pkg). I'll see about an extra update command to avoid this.

Correct, pkgin search works without sudo afterwards.
Great, if pkgsrc.joyent.com/install-on-osx would include the update before the search, that would be seamless

[CONFUSING BEHAVIOR & UPCOMING CHANGES]
The -w has a confusing behavior that it's had since back to ack 1.x
that will be changing in the future. It's not changing in this
version, but this is a heads-up that it's coming.

ack -w is "match a whole word", and ack does this by putting turning
your PATTERN into \bPATTERN\b. So "ack -w foo" effectively becomes
"ack \bfoo\b". Handy.

The problem is that ack doesn't put a \b before PATTERN if it begins
with a non-word character, and won't put a \b after PATTERN if it
ends with a non-word character.

The problem is that if you're searching for "fool" or "foot", but
only as a word, and you do "ack -w foo[lt]" or "ack -w (fool|foot)",
you'll get matches for "football and foolish" which certainly should
not match if you're using -w.
