Signing Up for GitHub

First step, and it's an obvious one, but you need to go to the GitHub homepage, http://github.com.

GitHub Homepage

  • Pick a username.
  • User your college email address. This is important as it makes it easier to claim the GitHub education discount, and it allows us to know who you are when using GitHub Classrooms.
  • Pick a password.

Click the big green button.

Choose the free plan. You'll be able to sign-up for an educational discount later that will give you private repositories while you are a student.

Click the green continue button.

Verify Your Email Address

The next step is to verify your email address. You should have recieved an email from GitHub with a link to verify your email address. Click the link.

You can check if your email has been verified, or to resend the verification email, be going to Settings >> Emails

You can also add additional email addresses here.

Claiming Educational Discount

As a student, you can request a discount from GitHub to get unlimited private repositories, for free. Go to: https://education.github.com/discount_requests/new

  • select Student
  • select Individual account

Click the green Next button

On the next page:

  • Enter your name
  • For verifying academic status, use your college email address. The email address needs to be verified before you can use it. (see above)
  • For school name, enter "South Eastern Regional College"
  • Select your graduation year
  • Add something about how you plan to use GitHub

Click the green submit button

That should be it. Normally the request is granted immediately, but sometimes it does take a few days.
