- Pick a password.

Choose the free plan. You'll be able to sign-up for an educational discount later that will give you private repositories while you are a student.
Click the green continue button.
The next step is to verify your email address. You should have recieved an email from GitHub with a link to verify your email address. Click the link.
You can check if your email has been verified, or to resend the verification email, be going to Settings >> Emails
You can also add additional email addresses here.
As a student, you can request a discount from GitHub to get unlimited private repositories, for free. Go to: https://education.github.com/discount_requests/new
- select Student
- select Individual account
Click the green Next button
On the next page:
- Enter your name
- For verifying academic status, use your college email address. The email address needs to be verified before you can use it. (see above)
- For school name, enter "South Eastern Regional College"
- Select your graduation year
- Add something about how you plan to use GitHub

That should be it. Normally the request is granted immediately, but sometimes it does take a few days.
