I am not disagreeing with this, but what's the rationale about no longer installing pulseaudio?

It's not about not installing it, but removing special handling for trusty (Ubuntu 14.04), where (I guess) additional repository was needed for new enough pulseaudio.

Yes, because Trusty is no longer supported.
