Secondary ionization cascades seeded by each element may now be tracked with separate free e- continuums.

Consider a sample containing carbon (C) and sulfur (S):

  • photoionization or Auger decay of S -> e- added to S continuum
  • e- in free e- continuum of S collides with and ionizes a C atom -> e- added to S continuum
  • e- in continuum of S scatters off e- in continuum of C, resulting in e- with energies E1 and E2 -> continuums of S and C both get "half" an e- with E1, and another "half" an e- with E2.
