[Events] Solidify process for creating and displaying events #5

@roccosomazzi Here are a couple of example events - The pages are set to one column (similar to https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/angel-city-jazz-fest/the-bobby-bradford-quartet/) but I need to dig into the theme. The calendar, widgets, and shortcodes also need some theming to get right. That said, above is a running list of blocks and features we're incorporating (or need) in those pages. What else do you think we need? What do you think of the layout and formatting? Once we're happy with the format, I can try to create a template or we can create new events by copying. |

Hi Gus, so I'm ready to upload artist pages with event info (basically just
a date when the VR video will be available and the option to RSVP or
register for a small donation). My current idea is to make the VR videos
available on a specific day after which they will be moved to the archives
accessible for members only.
Also I have a writer working on the exploration articles. I can start
uploading some text and images there as well.
Before I do any of that I wanted to see where we're at with the templates.
I figured it's better to let you build the template and then work on edits
and uploading info afterwards. I have time today through Wednesday to work
on this. Let me know the best way to proceed.

Hey Rocco I created a separate issue #6 to sort out the registration and membership flow for the festival. Following up on #5 (comment), what do you think about having the related events (and/or other blocks) into the sidebar? I'd still need to style, but using the default layout would resolve the issue we're having with the template https://support.theeventscalendar.com/ticket_qT5qN33LGf9865pK How do you feel about the other elements in the example pages and outlined in #5 (comment)? |
I woyld change the sidebar to upcoming events and more of a list not necessarily with photos. At the bottom of the sidebar we could also have som egenral info about the series (like sfjazz dioes) and a general tip jar (see here: https://www.sfjazz.org/watch/) |
Ok - I can play around with the sidebar content. What about the content/structure of the event page itself (aside from the ticketing/event pass flow). Once we're happy with the format, I think it's going to be faster/easier (at this point) to create new events by copying content from an existing one. If you're good with that, I'll provide some instructions on how to do that. |
I think the general format should work. Do we have any control over the cover image formatting? I didn't like the way, it's blowing up the images at teh moment. Thanks |
Assuming you're asking about the Featured image, it's set by default to take images at least 1200 by 675 pixels. This apparently is the default Newspack & WordPress setting (I'm still getting used to WP) as described here - The Events content type (powered by the Events Calendar plugin) also has a similar field for featured image but it might take a bit of theming (of course) to get it right - So for this event page - I think the reason this image looks blown up is this plugin resizing images (https://wordpress.org/plugins/imagemagick-engine/) - For right now, I'd just make sure the featured image is at least 1200 by 675 pixels. |
Couple things as I played around with the event content type a bit more -
I'll add some screengrabs and detail on the process in the description if this sounds like a good process for adding the rest of the artists. |

Where shall I enter the line-up info and event time info? THe current
artist pages have no layout for that

The event pages are the same thing as artist pages. The RSVP, ticketing, and links (or embeds) to the performance videos will also go on these pages (I'm updating the todo in the issue description). Do you see the block for date / time here? https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/wp-admin/post.php?post=1364&action=edit Clicking on it should bring up this detail - You also should see the lineup/personnel block - If you wanted to add a youtube or spotify embed, try adding right below those blocks - similar to https://content-angelcityjazz.pantheonsite.io/wp-admin/post.php?post=1353&action=edit You can also just overwrite that one unless Artifacts Trio is playing again. what I used to do on my old site is have a page for each group, a separate
event page that could feature several groups (this might not be necessary
if I only have one group per event, but in the future I will be doing
double bills again for sure) and another page with a gallery of all the
artists appearing. For example if I had a collaboration with two well known
artists there would be a page with a photo of both of them and info on the
project, a separate page with the information on the concert and what other
group was performing with them and in the artists page there would be a
photo of each musicians linking to their project page.

So I've been overwriting some of the old artist pages with the new artist
info. I tried to copy the calendar block form the Artifact Trio to the
other posts and I get this message:
Your site doesn't include support for the "tribe/event-datetime" block
Also I was looking at the list of all the posts on the site and the
Artifact Trio post is not there. I'm confused.

I think we're both thinking the same thing - we do also want to have artist pages which will group together events, vids, articles, etc associated with the artist Touched on that in the other issue #3 (comment) I'll try to roll that in once I figure out the best WordPress way to do that. For presenting this years fest I think posting as events is the correct way to go. |

Is it possible to have the title overimposed on the image on the event
pages (Like the posts)? Also I'd like to add a subtitle also overimposed on
the image with info like Recorded at REDCAT on September 11. One more
thing: I could not find a way to darken the image with an overlay which
would be necessary with the overimpositions

So I replaced the featured image block with a cover and hid the title Think this works better? If so, I can swap out the others and then you can refine. The featured image will still appear in blocks, sidebars, calendars, etc. so we'd also keep those... |

I think all the post previews should be the same size. THis goes for the
playlists as well.
On another note, I noticed that the ticket button on the event pages now
are way too close to the venue's website link. Can you separate them a
little?

Hi Gus, I fixed the ticket button spacing by adding a top margin to your
CSS code. Also I changed the banner on the landing page. I think it looks
pretty clean now. I'm going to start working on the logo but I noticed that
you have some CSS for that section. SHould we remove the CSS so that I can
use the logo carousel's own settings? Otherwise they will be in conflict
and the result might be unpredictable.

Hey Rocco
We’re driving up to Maine for family vacation this week. I have the
computer and will jump on later today.
It would be best for me to make the changes like ticket spacing in CSS -
the manual spacers take time and can throw things off.
Are you talking about adding the sponsors back under the tickets or
something else
What kinda conflict do you think the css is affecting?
Taking out any of the CSS classes out could throw the layout out of whack.
I can make changes to spacing and margins in the style sheet or customizer?

The only other thing I need to figure out is out to add the logos below the
ticket button. Lat time I tried they would show up on the mobile but mot on
the desktop.

Done - I had to adjust with CSS.
Problem is there's an uneven amount of playlists so doesn't look balanced w/ 2 columns. I'll try something else later when I get a chance. |
I created an alternative way to display logos by using a paragraph block
for the script:

If you think this works better I can set them up on the live site.

@angelcityjazz Following up on the new events here - I played with font colors, size and spacing a bit - how do the events look now? The YouTube vids look a bit inconsistent for the last event - would be better if you found two with the same aspect ratio Other than that, I think they look better? We also can add back the 'events' menu item so folks could easily access https://angelcityjazz.com/events/ |
THe formatting is good and the event page works well. Next week, I'd like
to try to switch out the 2021 festival block on the homepage with an
upcoming event block. I think I can do that on my own

There are certainly improvements I'd still like to make with some of the features/displays (like venue or even artist pages) down the line, but the pages look pretty good now! Quick question on the topic of events... should we add 'events' back to the main menu so this section will be easily found? The only reason why we might not is if there were no events to display after these two. Not sure if you have anything upcoming 'before' the festival, but maybe we could actually raise the funds to follow through with some live replays (like we were talking about here #33). |
We could add it to the menu until the May concerts are over and then take
