recent additions to the Nix manual clarify the distinction between search path and lookup path, and also document the resolution algorithm. lookup paths are now a distinct Nix language construct with its own reference documentation.

this clarifies a lot about how all that stuff works, and also exposes its hidden complexities, allowing us to tell a consistent story about how to use stable Nix interfaces while staying out of trouble.
