Meeting Purpose

This is our first Robotics interest group meeting. In this meeting we will address some important topics for the interest group such as organising our landing page, scheduling events and establishing moderators for our channel on discord. This is very much a meeting to cover logistics and get to know other members of the interest group.

1. Informal Introductions

Informal chat where members can talk with each other.

2. Interest Group Landing Page

Landing page walkthrough and instructions on how to open a pull request to include yourself as a member on the landing page.

Points raised during meeting:

  • Consider linking to within mlc wiki first and then to GitHub pages site.
  • Keeping robot in title? (Yes)

Resolution:

  • For now we have maintained the robot section on the website

3. Interest Group Mission Statement

Discussion of the mission statement for the group and how we wish to phrase this on the website.

Points raised during meeting:

  • Continue discussion on discord to evolve mission statement
  • Materials/guidance for beginners? (ROS, real-world experiments, Udacity course + Coursera etc. - write blog post?)
  • Collaborations to reproduce research papers, writing new research etc. (add more details to mission statement)

Resolution:

  • We have updated the mission statement to include a few words on fostering collaboration between members.

4. Brainstorm Event Series

Establishing our first event series based on what members want to cover. We could choose to do a deep dive on topics such as simulators, ROS, applications of deep reinforcement learning to robotics, etc. or even host AMA sessions with invited speakers.

Points raised during meeting:

  • Reading group with roles (maybe unsustainable? hacker role; split into two groups: implementation/theory) vs Traditional reading group
  • Remain open minded about reading group format
  • Host beginner friendly sessions (encourage participation + expectations of participation)
  • Sessions being rigid, focus on ensuring regular attendance to increase familiarity amongst members? Host more open-format sessions?
  • Timezone issues, ensure to have timeslots available for different timezones.
  • AMA with researchers/engineers/students in academia/industry. Start with informal meetings in smaller numbers and build up to larger sessions.
  • Coding/implementation sessions.

Resolution:

  • Three meeting types proposed on discord: reading group session, implementation session and watch parties. Scheduling is to occur pending vote displaying interest for various meeting types.

5. Robotics Channel Moderators

We also need committed members who wish to act as moderators for our discord channel.

Points raised during meeting:

  • Ruturaj Sambhus
  • Jumman Hossain
  • David Murphy
  • Saeid Tafaozzol
