This repository offers administrators, analysts and information security professionals hands-on guidance on how to configure Windows Event Logging and centralize the collection using Windows Event Forwarding.
The documents included are written as a technical baseline to create visibility into your network by generating and collecting events that are deemed to have detection or forensic value while aiming to keep noise to a minimum. Configurations in this baseline will be complementary to your AV, IDS or EDR deployments. This approach will enable your organization to track down malicious behavior, shorten the investigation time in case of an incident and improve forensic readiness.
Please note that this repository is not:
-
A replacement for your Anti-Virus, Intrusion Detection System or Endpoint Detection & Response solutions
-
A one-size-fits-all auditing recommendation
-
A compliance checklist
-
A guide on how to analyze the collected data
The Windows Event Logging document contains the recommended events that should be collected centrally regardless of using Windows Event Forwarding or third party SIEM. The recommendations are based on our assessment of which events provide the most visibility into your environment and can be used to assist in forensic analysis, threat hunting or the detection of malicious behavior.
A distinction is made between events that are configured by default and events that require the configuration of a Group Policy. You can use the overview table to navigate to a particular event category where you will either find the group policy settings to configure (and which systems to configure them for), or information on events which are enabled by default.
At the end of the document you will find a table, which just like the included JSON-mapping (described further down), provides an overview of all the event IDs that are important for collection and monitoring.
If your organization currently does not have a solution in place to centrally collect Windows Event Logs, the steps in this document will guide you through the process of setting up a WEF/WEC infrastructure. This configuration uses a subscription to filter and collect the events as recommended in Windows Event Logging.
Note
|
If you are using other eventlog based applications for example Sysmon, you should change the subscription.xml file accordingly. |
The configurations are aimed at Windows environments with a minimum OS version of Windows 10 1709 for client systems and Windows Server 1803 for (member) servers. When deploying these configurations on older versions, some features may not work and some group policies may not be available. You may find it useful to create separate audit configurations based on the type of system (Clients, Domain Controllers, Member servers).
You should consider for what time range you want to collect, analyse and store Windows Event Logs. While the amount of data you can store heavily depends on your environment, we recommend having a historical set of data that goes back at least six months in time. You can achieve this retention by increasing log file sizes, using the archival feature that comes with Windows Event Logs or include the logs into your back-up strategy. Step 4 and 6 of our Windows Event Collection document describes the first two methods.
You should gradually introduce and test the configurations within this repository before applying them to a production environment. Impact on the network and storage needs can differ depending on the size of the organization and the typical daily use of the systems within the organization. In the section below you will find additional guidance and recommendations by Microsoft on sizing and how to plan accordingly when deploying advanced auditing policies.
