VIGOR - Viral Genome ORF Reader

VIGOR4 (Viral Genome ORF Reader) is a Java application to predict protein sequences encoded in viral genomes. VIGOR4 determines the protein coding sequences by sequence similarity searching against curated viral protein databases funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Background

VIGOR was initially written for The JCVI Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases (GSCID) at The J. Craig Venter Institute is sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The current version, VIGOR 3.0, is equipped with over 70 reference databases covering more than 30 groups of viruses. It has major shortcomings in software design and in the tight binding between software and reference databases, hindering any further development and expansion in scope.VIGOR4 is developed from scratch in JAVA 8 which will allow desired scalability and versatility.

VIGOR4 currently annotates the following viruses:

  • Influenza (A & B for human, avian, and swine)
  • West Nile Virus
  • Zika Virus
  • Chikungunya Virus
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus
  • Rotavirus
  • Enterovirus
