Option to hide the Navigation Bar #759
Comments
Not sure if Navigation bar is meant to be a Toolbar, but if so, I would also like to have an option to hide toolbar via shortcut. For me, the best solution would be to use "," button which already provides options like "one-handed control", "clipboard", "switch language", "settings". Having there an option to show / hide toolbar without need to jump into settings would be really useful. Settings screen is more like for persistent / long term changes, while toolbar is being used from case to case; for example, when you write notes in app which already provides build-in toolbar, a keyboard toolbar becomes redundant and takes an extra screen space, but when you switch to messages or plain sticky note, you may want to use keyboard toolbar again. |
I would assume navigation bar means navigation bar. For hiding the toolbar / suggestion strip there is already another issue. |
This feature should be already built-in in Android OS (or in ROM / customized OS your device is using). For example on EMUI 10, you can hide system's navigation bar by tapping on "arrow down" key located on navigation bar. To show navigation bar, you need to swipe from the bottom of the screen. This control requires Settings > System & updstes > System navigation > "Three key navigation" > Settings > Hide navigation keys (enabled). |
It seems to me that I did not describe the term properly. So I am not talking about "navigation bar" but "toolbar" one, the one that shows suggestions, arrow with shortcuts etc. See screenshot below. |
Describe the solution you'd like
An option on the keyboard (e.g. swipe left on space bar or similar) and in the settings (under 'Preferences') to hide the Navigation Bar when not needed. If an user wants to make the hiding of the aforementioned possible, it would tick, or turn on this option under 'Preferences' and then choose its gesture/long-press shortcut on the keyboard.
Use cases
I think that the usage of this option and whether it would be useful depends on one's personal preferences. I personally like not to have any additional things displayed if I do not need them at that particular moment. In my experience, it would also use less area of screen display, which might be useful to those users with smaller screens.
Describe alternatives you've considered (if any)
I tried lowering the keyboard's height, so that the keyboard takes up less screen space, but I did not feel at all comfortable with the compactness of the keyboard.
