As discussed in issue #77 and in the PyKrige issue we want to support arbitrary field dimensions.

This commit is a first step towards arbitrary dimensions.
One problem with using a more general distance function is that the parallelisation is not working anymore. We'll have to discuss how much effort we want to put into the parallelisation of the variogram estimation. Of course, it gets more and more important with increasing dimensions... ;-)

I'd say: LGTM. It looks much cleaner.

# quick and dirty assembly of pos
if dim == 1:
pos = np.atleast_2d(x)
elif dim == 2:
pos = np.array((x, y))
else:
pos = np.array((x, y, z))

Why not use the xyz2pos routine here?

I implemented this with 73f1b68

There, parallelism is working. Closing this one in favor of the direct-vario branch.
