The cost of the soil temperature solution appears to have increased dramatically between CLM4 and CLM4.5. I think that the increase in cost is a factor of ~10.

Between CLM4 and CLM4.5, there was a switch between the tridiagonal solution and a band diagonal solution.

In discussion today: We need a band diagonal with the current science, because of extra interaction terms. It's possible that we could fall back to tridiagonal if running without ponded water store (and maybe subgrid-scale terms?).
