Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

We are facing a lot of confusion over the vague term "fatigue" currently used to mean "lack of sleep". As we continue to add more different physical and mental resources that exhaust at different speed, this term cannot easily be identified and needs to be renamed.

"Stamina" is not as bad an offender, but likewise can mean many things and should be replaced with something that means exactly what we mean by this term.

In contrast, "focus", "morale", and "weariness" for example all give clear ideas what they mean and are not as easy to mistake for something else.

Solution you would like.

  1. Rename stamina to "breath": in the future it will be used for aerobic exercise as well as oxygen demand eg. when swimming or holding breath to move through smoke, so this name is pretty good for all purposes.
  2. Rename fatigue to "sleepiness", abbreviated "sleep", or possibly "somnolence".

Describe alternatives you have considered.

It's debatable if stamina needs to change or not, but I think the new term makes it easier to tell exactly what it means especially if we have other short term physical expendable resources.

Additional context

This frees up important design space for adding new expendable physical resources. I have one in particular that will be exciting.

In a general sense we should avoid using the term "fatigue" for anything specific in game as it's extremely general and hard for a player to know exactly what kind of fatigue we mean.

I tried to think of alternative terms for "breath," because that might also be confusing to new players until it's explained. But I could only think of other, also-rather-general terms like Capacity, or too-long phrasings like "Lung Capacity."

+1 to renaming fatigue to sleepiness but stamina should imho stay ("breath" or "lung capacity" sound like something that'll be depleted underwater/in a vacuum and this is the core game, not Aftershock :P )

Any synonyms to stamina I can come up with (e.g. https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/stamina ) are even more vague (endurance? energy?) or totally off the mark (grit)

The metric we use for stamina now is also the best metric to use for lung capacity, since holding your breath does in fact reduce your running, and running before diving will limit your dive length. The term then works both for things like "winded" and "out of breath" as well as for "holding your breath" and such. The only confusion I foresee is meta confusion from people who expect it to only be for swimming. On the flip side it will be confusing if "stamina" is the name of the stat that determines how long you can hold your breath imo

The diving reflex specifically relaxes and slows down your body to conserve oxygen. And the beta blocker class of medications, which block adrenaline, are considered doping in the sport of freediving. So yeah, it's all connected.

The only alternatives to "stamina" I can think of are all more than one word and aren't as game UI-friendly: things like blood oxygen, oxygen saturation, and aerobic capacity.
