Does the Pixhack have the same CAN IC as the Pixhawk?

The board pinout naming suggests it has CAN_RX and CAN_TX which would suggest otherwise (which means that this is not a CAN bus interface, but a CAN transceiver interface). I also haven't been able to get any of my CAN peripherals running on it.

Yes, precisely. Crucial design flaw.

Your design is broken. There is no CAN transreceiver IC (e.g MAX 3051)
on the board, to translate between CAN_RX / TX to a CAN-PHY bus.
