Printing can be problematic for a variety of reasons:

  • users may not have a printer
  • users may not know that it's possible to print to PDF
  • users may want to save the backup codes as a text file
  • there may be browser compatibilities with printing

As an example, here's a report by kellychoffman:

I was running through the steps to disable and then re-enable 2FA today and came to the step where it asked me to print out my backup codes. I don't have a printer and wished there was a way to download a text file of the codes.

Another example is a bug with iOS devices not handling the 'Print' button well, reported by allendav and rachelmcr:

If you tap the Print button on me/security/two-step on iPhone, Safari Mobile doesn't seem to complete the action of opening a new browser window to display a printable view. It starts to open a new tab and then either returns to the same tab or remains in the in-between tabs view shown below:

It is possible to tap and hold to highlight the codes on that screen, and from there to copy and paste them elsewhere.

Is there another flow like that (other than the Print button) that we could experiment with for saving two-step backup codes? Here are some ideas:

  • a 'copy codes' button
  • a 'save to text file' button

These can be added instead of or in addition to the print button. We can also include different actions based on browser capabilities.

Issue #398 is related and should be fixed at the same time.
