How can I integrate a Java application into Phoenix?

In my LLM application, a part is developed using Java programs, and I want to route some of the Java program's links according to the protocol to Phoenix. How can I do this?

Hey there 👋 thanks for reaching out! If I can clarify, are you hoping to record LLM activity from your Java service into phoenix?

If so, we don't have any official integrations available for Java but you can actually send spans from your LLM calls into phoenix using opentelemetry for Java and pointing the collector endpoint to phoenix.

If you can produce spans that look like this https://docs.arize.com/phoenix/tracing/how-to-tracing/manual-instrumentation you'll be in good shape.

If any community members have any open source examples instrumenting Java I'd love to see it shared here as well 🙏

Thank you for your reply! As you mentioned, I can build the data to be delivered to Phoenix following the OpenTelemetry protocol.

The request chain in my scenario is as follows: user_input --> java service ----> python service (which uses the Phoenix SDK). When the user request reaches the Java service, a TraceId is generated by the Java service. Then, the Java service will make an HTTP request to the Python service, adding the TraceId field to the HTTP header, so that the TraceId can be passed to the Python service.

Here, I would like to ask whether the Phoenix Python SDK has the capability to set the TraceId so that the Java service and the Python service can use the same TraceId to construct a complete trace chain.

That is a great question and an interesting use case. Here are some docs we provide on customizing emitted spans in python https://docs.arize.com/phoenix/tracing/how-to-tracing/customize-spans but I think the bigger question would be whether you can tie together spans from distinct services into the same trace, which I personally do not know the answer to.

As a middle-ground if we can't figure this particular use case out, you can take advantage of sessions. This is a feature that lets you tie distinct traces together into a unified view in the phoenix UI as a "Session". Just emit spans with the same session_id, which you could pass around via headers, and they will be linked together.

Hey @rayzh-lab 👋 I believe the mechanism you might be looking for is OTel context, which allows you to send OTel data across service boundaries.
