The actual number of citations that can be stored before exceeding quota depends on many factors (browser, size of individual reference etc.); e.g. I was able to store ~2000 items from Pubmed before exceeding the limit.

When this happens, or ideally just before this happens, we should report an error and recommend switching to Zotero.
