It would be nice to have the focus switched automatically to the search box when you open a new tab. This way you can just start typing. This would be similar to browsers, where the focus is switched to the address bar after opening a new tab.

+1 for this... I just came on here to see about contributing this change myself ... happy to pull the source and submit a PR if this is going to take a while....
