I'd like to move towards AMP native and wondering on the status of this project.

Two big areas I'd like to contribute patches are additional color customization settings and some additional actions/filters for customization. Thoughts?

As noted on #92 you would probably be better of to just make these changes to your own fork. I don't foresee this theme being maintained further where it is right now as it was really made for the purpose of being a demo for AMP Conf.
