That's on my TODO list.
Probably using https://github.com/gabomdq/SDL_GameControllerDB for the mappings would be a good idea.

Would this make products like the 8BitDo Wireless Adapter or Mayflash Magic-NS work? I've always wanted to eliminate the battery-hungry Wii remote and directly use another (Bluetooth) controller!

(Relatedly: is it conceivable that the internal Bluetooth module could be made to emulate the Wii remote by directly translating from another Bluetooth controller?)
