Use case:
I have a monitor that is more than 4K.
I use desktop streaming (via Parsec), which do not support more than 4K resolutions.
I need a way to quickly/automatically switch resolutions between two chosen options.

Alternative way is to create shortcuts for this, but it would likely be too complex.
More general and interesting solution is to provide some access for automation, like command-line syntax, applescript, automator etc.
So for the described task I would create some shortcut or script that would set resolution to (b) when streaming starts and revert it to (a) when streaming ends.

% betterdisplay set "mateview-1" -res "2560x1440xhidpi" -brightness 70

Yes, I plan to add CLI and Shortcuts support as well, it's on the enhancements list. :) Don't know when I'll get there, but it's on my radar and certainly want to do it!
