Older MacOS Compatability?

I've been testing BetterDummy on my Big Sur and Monterey machines and it's been working great!

Is there any chance of supporting older versions of Intel MacOS? IE: High Sierra (10.13), Mojave (10.14), or Catalina (10.15)? I know a few labs that converted to remote that still run on the older OS's for specific software, that would really benefit for this sort of setup.

Catalina might work with some superficial modifications but I don't have a setup to try unfortunately. If you'd like to volunteer I can try buildig a version and we'll see. I don't think I can support Catalina on the long run though as I simply don't have the hardware to test compatibility. BetterDummy in its current state benefits Apple Silicon mostly I think. Future versions might have more benefit for Intel (as the Picture in Picture functionality, virtual display streaming and if I can make it work, HDR overdrive are generally useful features).

Thanks. Ideally it would be great to go as far back as High Sierra (even if SIP needs to be disabled). The idea would be to create Dummy monitors on headless machines to support remote workers as home setup resolutions for freelancers tend to vary greatly. IE maybe they have an ultrawide at home but the headless system doesn't support ultrawide resolutions out of the box (or even with a Dummy DVI or HDMI physical plug).

Totally understand not being able to support older OS's in the long run, but it would be interesting to see if it were possible to get a single working version.

I have High Sierra, Mojave, and Catalina systems I could test on.

hey, just adding my interest. i would also benefit greatly from a version compatible with Mojave. happy to beta test.

Having this app on (at least) Mojave would be tremendously useful especially for 17-inch MacBook Pro that features 2560x1600 (QHD) displays that defaults to incorrect (Very small) scaling. I've tried many different options including enabling HiDPI but no matter what I do it wouldn't scale properly. :(

Hey @LPFchan - you should try the great SwitchResX app or there is a free version of RDM that can create custom resolution on Intel as well - these might help fix this and these should have a Mojave compatible versions.

I am afraid BetterDummy won't be supporting Mojave especially as I don't have any hardware to test it and I am unsure if the required macOS APIs existed then (probably yes). The source code of the 1.0.x version is up there however, an enterprising soul with the right machine might want to try making it work.

I am afraid this probably won't happen. The differences between MacOS X and the newer macOS versions are just too big (for an app that relies a lot on undocumented and ever-changing OS features) and I don't have any hardware capable of running older OS versions to test. Sorry about this! :(

Do you have any advice for getting started with the undocumented API (in my case for Mojave, specifically) to figure out the implementation of some basic use cases? In particular, I am looking to add a few dummy monitors at specific resolutions. I am currently relying on an app called Immersed to create the monitors (it can stream their content inside an oculus quest headset) and it's remarkably buggy. It would be a lot better if I could replace this functionality of the app with a DIY solution.
