The purpose of this issue is to track the review APCA as a possible contrast algorithm to address contrast needs.

A Review and Rebuttal

Circa July 2022, GitHub user xi (Tobias Bengfort) created a repo with the landing page "The missing introduction to APCA". The repo also had a file "Detailed analysis of APCA". It's important to understand that this repo is not using the actual APCA methods, and therefore is not a valid analysis.

When that repo was created, we were concerned about the possibility of confusion, as the files contained statements that were misleading or incorrect. Also, the setup of the demos/examples were biased in a way that obscures the true differences. At the head of the 'analysis' page, xi states that he is "without any training in the science around visual perception." But attempting to "compare math" without understanding or applying the underlying theories does not lead to an informative comparison. Failing to convince xi to fix the issues, we created a fork with the necessary corrections and commentary.

The corrected fork's "The missing introduction to APCA" was revised only for accuracy, adding some clarifying comments with the intention of maintaining xi's original tone and simplicity. The examples were using the correct APCA methods to demonstrate the true, significant differences to WCAG 2, which xi had obfuscated.

Also in the fork is this "rebuttal" to the analysis page, "Derailed Analysis of APCA". The rebuttal has added comments to address the misconceptions presented.

For accurate information regarding APCA and perceptual contrast, see the linktree at linktr.ee/Myndex. The linktree links to the plain language "Easy Intro to the APCA Contrast Method" and supporting articles and resources.
