Testing the changes
Tested with sagemath long testsuite.
This causes a single test failure in sagemath but in fact the new behaviour is less wrong than before (see: sagemath/sage#35676 (comment)).
I'll fix the test failure in sagemath when we next update it. No need to hold this update.
