pickingRadius per layer

I've got a scenario like so - some icons in the middle of some lines.

The problem is it's very hard to hover on the icon - with the lines all ending at it, they end up taking precedence (even though they're 1m lower - this depth information seems to fall away when zoomed out). I don't understand picking fully, but if I could increase the pickingRadius on the icon layer then that might help?
