Describe the issue
I have my machines stored in a folder, like "~/Virtual Machines/UTM/Ubuntu Linux.utm". So, they are "shortcuts".

A few days ago, they were all working. Now, with the machine totally updated (2020 MacBook Air M1) and running UTM 3.1.5, today I was presented with a popup message saying "Failed to access data from shortcut". All my machines give that message. Whats going on? I tried removing and re-adding them but no luck.

Configuration

  • UTM Version: 3.1.5
  • OS Version: 12.3
  • Intel or Apple Silicon? Apple Silicon

Crash log
No crash

Debug log
Can't get one because I can't re-add the machines. They are giving me the above message.

Since it seems to be a system-related issue, have you tried capturing a system log while attempting to re-add your VMs?

Sure, I can try it later, and I will follow up here.

For now I have resorted to keeping the machines in their default UTM location. Then I created alias for them where they originally were ("~/Virtual Machines" folder). Before that, I had them in an external SSD, but since I am travelling in Spain now, I thought it would be better to have them on my Mac until I'm back.

FWIW, I too have had my UTM VMs in a non-standard location.
At some point, at least the Windows VMs fail to start with the "Failed to access data from shortcut" error.
If I create a new VM in UTM and then move it to ~/vms, it'll fail to start with this error. If I move it back, it's fine.
However, the Win10 VM that I originally created in ~/vms still won't start (with the same eror), even if I move it into ~/Library/Containers/com.utmapp.UTM/Data/Documents

Try A

rm ~/Library/Containers/com.utmapp.UTM/.com.apple.containermanagerd.metadata.plist

Try B

May lost all vms and need import again

/Users/shuhai/Library/Containers/com.utmapp.UTM/Data/Library/Preferences/com.utmapp.UTM.plist
