Output to markdown list instead of code block to preserve more universal markdown format compatibility (can see Waypoint plugin for reference if it helps): https://github.com/IdreesInc/Waypoint/

This would also enable for collapsible bullets containing child items in the list.

This. I think it would make much more sense. But of course this is harder to realize.

Another plugin which I think you can use for reference is changed-notes-plugin, which adds all changed notes of one day to the daily note.

I guess your plugin could have to new options:

  1. Check if the bullet-list is up-to-date when opening the index/folder-note and add/change it accordingly.

  2. A command for re-indexing all to make sure all index-bullet-lists of all index-notes are correct.

Wouldn't this be also better in general since this way actual links are used and not a "virtual code block"?

I would also vote for this.
Currently, I am using the zoottelkeeper-obsidian-plugin for this purpose but it's outdated and buggy unfortunately

Agree this would be great. Also using Zoottelkeeper but would prefer to use Folder Index.

Two things I'd need

  • Support a Markdown list instead of the code block. As described above.
  • Provide the option to persist the generated Markdown list - so that you can look at it on github or equivalent without using Obsidian.

That make any sense?
