Escritoire: Cannot use samples to get hints

I've tried with bees and saplings, genes identified and not... and I can't input the items into the slots on the left side of the escritoire. That means I'm left with exclusively random guessing to try and get research notes, which makes the escritoire mostly useless.

Try Honey Drops, Honeydew, Bee Combs. Do any of those work?

Alright, that's user error then. I just put in honey drops and honey dew, on the left, and those made the button work. Bee combs don't, honey capsules don't.
