Gatsby Camp: Summer '21

The "Gatsby Camp: Summer '21" took place online on June 8, 2021 from 8am up to 12:30pm PDT. The conference was about the usage of the Gatsby services and tools and about the advantages it offers.

The Camp was mainly about subjects related to solving some technical problems. Also it was highlighted on which platforms it can be used and how it can be helpful for creating a faster and more secure solution.

The most important topics at a high level that were talked about were Gatsby's usage on the ecommerce platforms such as Shopify and WooCommerce and all the useful things that the Gatsby Cloud provides.

  • Kirsten Lambertsen - Sr. Product Manager at Gatsby (Host)

  • Dustin Schau - VP of Product at Gatsby

    Topic Discussed: Gatsby functions incorporating the developer's workflows and marketeers making a unique user experience. Additionally, it was discussed about the usage of the Gatsby Cloud i.e. developers making branches and marketeers editing the previews to complete a project.

    "Better site - better revenue"

  • Victoria Duggan - Engineering Program Manager, Platform at Shopify

    Topic Discussed: It was discussed about the five lessons for making the perfect ecommerce site - from her perspective:

    • Reduce complexity (using APIs for simplifying the usage, Shopify Storefront API)
    • Understand resourcing,
    • Testing (prototyping, correct assumptions),
    • Offline experience (Gatsby PWA, Reading articles about products - research)

  • Tom Hughes & Jon Thornton- Co-founders at Attach Digital

    Topic Discussed: Gatsby Cloud for ecommerce, Gatsby front-end tool.

    Topic Discussed: Reasons for using Gatsby. It provides the opportunity to use Json, Drupal and React with the Source Plugin Library from Gatsby

  • Madeline Jensen - Sr. Developer at Media Current

    Topic Discussed: Website architecture; Elaborating that the Media Current stopped using Jenkins for the result of speed

  • Trevor Heath - VP of Product at Novvum

    Topic Discussed:

    • Growing with Gatsby (his story) - Prisma.io, Novvum.io, Jaxxon.com
    • Discussed about the revolution eco system that Gatsby cloud offers
    • Combining data using the possibilities of GraphQL
    • Using Gatsby to make the best hybrid sites (static and dynamic combined)
  • Grayson Hicks & Greg Hardy- Sr. Software Engineers at Gatsby

    Topic Discussed: Functions of Gatsby are natural extensions. On the server's side APIs are using Gatsby functions. It was also discussed about the usage of ReachUI for populating zip codes (countries) and implementing them into the their project called Pup Snuggles.

Q&A

The final part of the Gatsby Camp 2021 was about questions from the audience. The speakers Dustin Schau and Kyle Mathews (VP of Gatsby and the Co-Founder of Gatsby) discussed about the questions the atendees asked. The main topics they elaborated were:

  • Exitement about the usage of Gatsby and its functions, help to produce super fast web site and static CDN
  • Use cases - functions, and how they turn you in to a wizard, super easy. Also about the influence and how most of the static website started to use Gatsby.
  • Sites with Gastby (CasperChace.com) and how you can incorporate more than 7 sources, and still have super fast website using the Gatsby plugins
  • Gatsby at ecommerce and how it slides static to dynamic, and how sites perform with Gatsby and Gatsby Cloud.
  • Sophisticated site - super fast and seamless, and how Gatsby can be used on all sites, not just static
  • About the measuring perfformance with Gatsby
  • Building a big site that can load super fast
  • Creating incredible UX but simple, no setup infrastructure, reliable, fast
