Help understanding EBU R 128 usage #1561
-
I enabled EBU R 128 normalization within Strawberry, set to -23 LUFS as I found recommended in several places, and it did normalize the audio in a way I was happy with. However, the result was that Strawberry was significantly quieter than all other system noises; loading up a video would surprise me with how loud it was in comparison. I know I could set Strawberry to above 100% volume in my system settings to compensate, but my understanding is that would cause distortion (maybe I'm wrong there). So, my question is, what is the best way to go about fixing this, as well as what do "LUFS" really measure in this context? It appears I can set it to a lower value (-19 LUFS for example) to get closer to normal system audio level, but I'm not fully understanding the "why" of -23 being recommended. Are LUFS related to volume? Is it the amount of dynamic range that is allowed? If EBU R 128 is lossless (as is my understanding) I'm not understanding why there would be a solidly "recommended" value as opposed to having it be set based on user preference. Happy to do some reading if people have an article for me, I tried doing research and everything I found was either too vague, or technical above my knowledge level in the area. Thanks! |

I think I have some better understanding, having done some research (including a Tom Scott video seen here which details some more; in that video around the 6:10 mark it says that the EU chose -23 just as a target to hit. So this number is not a "technical" decision, but a logistical one. I also found in the spec that is it lossless (top of page 10). So given this, it seems like it's just most of the rest of my media consumption and/or my system settings which aren't respecting the EU's recommendation of -23. Given that, there's no reason for me to not set it to whatever is "close enough" to the rest of my content. |
