Compiler error with the "smooth" package

It's not an immediate problem, as I can turn off the "smooth" package for now, but I was not able to compile using the dev cray opt file using the smooth package. It was a formatting error that I failed to capture. Turning off the package worked for now, but this will need to be addressed in the medium-to-long run.
