Keep tabs in code blocks

Is there an way to keep tabs in code blocks, rather than have them convert to spaces?

I'm currently doing the following, but I'd really prefer being able to configure it rather than hack around it!

this._converter.makeHtml(
    markdown.replace(/\t/g, '_XYZZY_TAB_')
).replace(/_XYZZY_TAB_/g, '\t');
