I may be misunderstanding but if a module is supported by Pythran and I have a line in a file that pythran will compile, that reads "import dtype" shouldn't that work? I'm getting an error

Hard to tell. Can you provide a minimal reproducer, i.e. the content of a python file with no more than a dozen of lines that showcases your issue.
