Is it possible to authenticate, using Windows Auth, to a site that has both Windows Auth and a custom wsfed solution enabled? I'm not talking about on different zones, but on the same zone. I realize I could extend the site and add only windows, but I'd love to avoid that.

With mixed auth, AFAIK, it's not about auth flow but the corresponding requests, which should contain additional x-forms_based_auth_accepted: f header. This might be helpful. My own personal preference is never to configure mixed auth in SharePoint ever.
