Info for the 2013 OSDF Workshop

These are details for the OSDF 2013 Workshop on the 4th November 2013. http://www.basistechweek.com/osdf.html#tutorials

Workshop Info

Workshop will go through a set of exercises using GRR, with short practical discussions and explanations of architecture and design spread through the 3.5 hours.

Note that we will be using the latest GRR release 0.2-9 for the workshop. This release is still in testing but can be installed with:

Connectivity

Given we are doing exercises via the internet, access is important. Connectivity will be provided by the hotel wireless. If this fails we will have a 4G modem on standby.

Requirements

  • A laptop capable of connecting to wifi and running an ssh client and RDP

  • `optional` Internet access via 4G etc in case hotel wireless and backups fail or are congested.

  • `optional` Additional local virtual machines or clients that you want to use in your GRR instance.

Virtual Machines

I’ve provisioned a set of 20 Windows and 20 [https://aws.amazon.com Linux Amazon EC2] machines for people to use. These are clean machines. Please pick machines off the Google spreadsheet sent to you via email put your name next one of each machine type. I will provision machines before the workshop.

If you want you are welcome to run with VMs or with your own provisioned EC2 instances so you can wipe/refresh/snapshot as you want. The details of the instances we will be using are:

  • Windows - Windows_Server-2008-SP2-English-64Bit-Base-2013.09.11 (ami-373a735e) - t1.micro - Free Tier instance.

  • Ubuntu - ubuntu-saucy-13.10-amd64-server-20131015 (ami-ad184ac4) - t1.small

Please note that you will need 1.5G ram, and 20G free disk on the GRR server machine.

Access

Access to the Windows machines is via RDP with username/password listed in the spreadsheet, these will be updated before the workshop starts.

Access to the Linux boxes is via SSH key grr-workshop-key.pem, which will be provided to people directly via email.

ssh -i grr-workshop-key.pem ubuntu@host

If you are using putty you will need to convert the key as per instructions here: http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/07/20/how-use-putty-with-an-ssh-private-key-generated-by-openssh/
