I currently use the Notifications Alert extension by Bellini to show in the panel when I have notifications, but the only changes the color of the default notification location, the clock/ calendar. It is a bit awkward to have the notification reminder in a completely different spot from the actually notification menu.
example
I saw that you were able to move the DND icon over to the quick settings section, so if there is anyway that you could also add a similar icon for active notifications, that would be great.
